Facebook Just Gave The Finger To Millions Of People Who Use It For News
OK That’s enough. How freaking disconnected do you have to be to actually believe that:
A: Promoted-or-otherwise page posts are heroically breaking the Filter Bubble.
B: The average Facebook user is sitting around today banging their keyboard in outrage over the idea that ‘OMG they’re going to see more posts from their friends!’
Then we can dive right in to the cause and effect problem inherent in the hypothesis here. Which is that people use Facebook for news because they want to *use* *Facebook* for news. It’s just that this is where they see stuff. If Facebook shows them less news, they’ll see stuff elsewhere. People read and watched the news before Facebook! Or they won’t and the traffic they were giving you was low quality anyway.
This is a good thing for any of us not running low quality social-click-farm operations. A great thing for journalism actually.
The panic over the idea that Facebook might release some control over the media and might act more like a social network is starting to get pretty dumb today.
