“Goldman’s actions—which critics say effectively provides funding to keep an authoritarian regime in power—didn’t play so well with those opposed to Maduro’s policies. Representatives for the opposition party have threatened that if an opposition led-government were to take power, it would refuse to do business with the bank. Protesters have gathered at Goldman’s New York headquarters to decry the “hunger bonds” that National Assembly president Julio Borges has characterized as the bank’s attempt to “make a quick buck off the suffering of the Venezuelan people.” Now, after a month’s worth of soul-searching, the bank has reportedly figured out where things went wrong. Per the Journal:

“‘In recent weeks, some firm executives have said privately that Goldman’s chief mistake wasn’t in buying the bonds—which it felt it was obligated to do on behalf of clients in its funds—but in going it alone.'”

Buying and selling “hunger bonds” is always more fun when you do it with friends.
