What Does a Lifetime of Leers Do to Us?
“Feminists have worked for decades to properly identify and name trauma. We call those who have been raped or abused “survivors.” We say that a person is in “recovery” for an eating disorder. Though they are imperfect, we have resources for victims should they choose to prosecute a perpetrator, go to a shelter or report harassment.
“But there is still the unexamined cumulative impact of living with sexism. Walking on the street, tweeting, working — just living — while female shapes who we are and who we think we can be.”
Feminism has made the world a better place, which is why we need to talk about our unfinished work.
